Celebrate the festive spirit with a handcrafted toran inspired by the traditional Indian art form Pichwai, originating from Rajasthan. This vibrant piece is painted on fabric using acrylic colours, showcasing intricate motifs like lotus flowers, cows, and peacocks—symbols often seen in Pichwai paintings. The toran blends cultural heritage with creativity, making it a perfect addition to your festive home décor.

STEP 1 : Procure the base and trace the design
  • We are going to make the Pichwai toran for the festival using casement fabric and canvas sheet.
  • Take A3 white paper draw 3 different designs on it. Take off white casement fabric, mark and cut 5 rectangles measuring 6 x 8 in size.
  • Trace the same design of cow and lotus on the fabric pieces inspired from the traditional art form called Pichwai. Refer to the image.
STEP 2 : Paint the design
  • paint the all 5 panels of the pichwai design using Acrylic Colours Burnt Sienna 01, Black, 02, Crimson 04, Golden Yellow 09, Lemon Yellow 11, Orange 17, Sap Green 21, White 27, Cerulean Blue 32, Leaf Green 62, Neon Pink 018 and Pearl Metallic Gold 352. Let it dry. Refer to the image.
STEP 3 : Finishing touches of panels for toran
  • Take plain canvas sheet, mark and cut the sheet as of the painted panel. Fold the extra edges of the painted panel on the rear side and stick the cut canvas sheet on it using Fabric Glue. Let it dry.
  • Take the pearl and ready tassel, attach the tassel with peral towards the bottom edge of the pannel using needle & thread. Refer to the image.
STEP 4 : Make the toran strip
  • Take the casement fabric, mark and cut the strip of the fabric to attach the panels measuring 6 x 38 in size.
  • Draw and trace the simple Lotus design in checkered pattern on it.
  • Paint the design with appropriate colours using Acrylic Colours Golden Yellow 09, Sap Green 21, White 27, Cerulean Blue 32 and Neon Pink 018. Let it dry.

 

STEP 5 : Final attachments
  • Mark and cut the canvas sheet in the size of the Toran strip.
  • Attach the painted panels to the toran strip using Fabric Glue.
  • For further finising stick the canvas sheet strip from the rear end with Fabric Glue. Let it dry. Refer to the image.
  • The Toran will look like this from the back side. Attach the fabric loops on the top side further to put it on the door.
STEP 6 : Final look
  • Your Pichwai Toran is ready to decorate your door in festive time.
